Round 3 of the Monster Energy Supercross series is all about the whoops! Track builders had them built and covered before the rain hit on Thursday and this has left them as hard as concrete. This track looks to suit Eli Tomac well, he isn’t a guy with the best timing and rhythm. The jumps here are peaked, but the big rhythms only consist of two launches. Tomac struggles when rhythms require three or more launches, but he doesn’t have to deal with that tonight.
Of course the boy wonder Adam Cianciarulo was fastest in qualifying, but didn’t look as consistently good as Tomac. Martin Davalos did what he has been known for throughout his career and dropped some fast lap times and was consistently near the top. Point leader Justin Barcia qualified 18th, the illness from last week must have taken a toll on him. The craziest thing about this is Barcia is only 2.6 seconds behind Cianciarulo, which means 1-18 are only separated by 2.6 seconds! Better get a good start to have a chance tonight.
In the 250 class Rookie Jett Lawrence is showing the talent everyone has been talking about. He seems to be getting better each round and if I was his competition I would be concerned. I am not saying he is going to start winning, but if they let him get a win he is talented enough to become an instant contender. Keep an eye on the outspoken Australian, I look for him to get his first podium tonight. Dylan Ferrandis was fast, but needs to get a better start, if he can’t get up front early it’s just too much to overcome. Justin Cooper struggled with the whoops and if he can’t get them figured out he could lose a nice chunk of points to Austin Forkner and Ferrandis.
